Welp, Easter is over, Mother’s Day is round the corner, and you know what that means. Swimsuit season! Time to rustle through your cabinets for last year’s can of spray tan or tanning mousse and turn your hands orange applying layers to your lily white legs.

For those blessed with dark skin, you can sit this part out and use the time to think about how jealous I am of your gorgeous natural glow.

After we turn ourselves into a what-not-to-do poster for Acme Fake Bake, it’s time for us to dig deep and obsess over our bodies. I don’t want to do this. I don’t want to stand in front of a mirror and pick apart every imperfection, every line, every bubble of cellulite, every varicose vein, and every flap of errant fat. Sadly, I must though, because I’m a woman and society says I have to feel ashamed that I don’t have Kendall Jenner’s body.

*sad music plays*

After a thorough assessment of my flaws, I will consider how I can wear a bedsheet with a hole in it as my swim couture this year. How will I hide my thick legs, my flab, my chunk, my junk in the trunk?

*record scratch*

Fuck that! This year we are celebrating the differences! We are celebrating all body types, and that includes cellulite, veins, flab, flub, pooches and pancakes. I’ve found some super flattering silhouettes with strategic styling to minimize and maximize, depending on your preference. If you hate your upper body, belly area, bust area, or lower half, I gotcha covered. Now let’s find the perfect swimsuit!

Don’t forget to get some super cute summer sandals too! Check out these 9 affordable sandals in classic styles!

In decades past, there were a handful of plus sized swimsuits available each season, usually at Lane Bryant, and always over $100. They were matronly, floral and a big bag of uggo.

Times have changed, and while we’re still getting paid 82 cents for every dollar a man makes, we have managed to demand better plus sized fashion, and that includes swimwear! So, I’ve compiled a list of affordable, flattering and fashionable suits for every plus size bonus size body type.

Need a cute pair of sunglasses to complete your look? I’ve gotcha covered with these trendy and inexpensive looks!

Black floral print tankini with shorts

Holipick Women Tankini Swimsuits Layered Ruffle Flounce Tankini Top with Boyshorts Two Piece Bathing Suits

←The Flouncy Tankini

For under $40 this layered flounce tankini with boy shorts is a winner. It comes in 30 patterns, including a solid black for all you minimalists. The straps are adjustable and there are removable soft cups. The very busy and flouncy top is a great option for individuals who may have had a mastectomy and want to draw attention away from their chests, or folks who are just self conscious about their breasts. The narrow space between the straps looks great on gals with broad shoulders (of which I am eternally envious). This suit is a good option for a rectangle body shape because there are no sharp lines and the silhouette is flowy.

What I love:

  • The top is long, so it will cover my c-section pouch quite nicely
  • The flouncy layers rock because I don’t have to subconsciously suck my gut in all day
  • The boy shorts are high waisted so no muffin top

What I don’t love:

  • No underwire for larger chested ladies.

LALAGEN Womens Halter Swimdress Plus Size Two Piece Swimsuit Tankini Set

The Retro Swimdress Tankini

If you love swimdresses, this is your girl. It’s feminine with a slightly longer swim skirt, has a fitted waist and an A-line frame for the bottom heavy crew. As far as top heavy, there are moulded cups, underwires and double back closures. We’re talking a classic bra back strap and a halter tie too. Your girls are not popping out of this suit! Also, if you have a small, defined waistline, this is the right swimsuit for you.  It comes in 14 colors/patterns. Throw on the included high waisted bottoms (boy shorts) and you’re ready for a pool party at an Art Deco hotel in Palm Springs. This is the best bet if you want a very feminine look with extra support.

What I love:

  • Adjustable straps
  • Double support system – halter tie and back strap.
  • Underwire cups
  • Slightly longer skirt

What I don’t love:

  • The white piping is on every color/print.
  • Generalized sizing. I’d like to see cup sizes.

The Peplum Tankini

This is a unique style I’ve seen more of lately. The peplum top is flattering and makes the suit more interesting to look at. In my mind, that means less attention to details I’d rather not have scrutinized. This tankini has criss cross detachable straps, and what appear to be moulded cups in the video. The description does not mention the cups, however. The bottoms are advertised as high waisted, but look at the video and decide for yourself. This is anther suit that looks great if you have a narrow waist and want to emphasize one of your best features.

The peplum version comes in 9 prints, and there is a halter version with a flounce instead of a peplum, if you wanna show off that belly button ring. That one comes in 4 colors.

What I love:

  • Peplum top is interesting and flattering
  • High-waist bottoms

What I don’t love:

  • No mention of underwires or removable padding
  • “High waist” bottoms look mid-rise in photos
  • No cup sizes
  • No solid colors available, only patterns
horizontal striped tankini swimsuit

Gloria&Sarah Plus Size Bathing Suits for Women Color Block Striped Tankini Swimsuits with Boyshorts Swimwear S-XXXXL

The Sporty Tankini

The Gloria&Sarah tankini is definitely a sportier look, and isn’t necessarily for looking sexy at the swim up bar. It comes in 4 colors, all with the same horizontal pattern. I chose this one because it comes in numbered plus sizes, is modest for top heavy gals, and is more sporty less overtly girly for individuals who need to wear proper coverage up top, but may not necessarily identify as feminine. As a gal with a large bust, this full coverage top would make me feel very comfortable knowing I wouldn’t pop out.

What I love:

  • More Sporty Spice, less Posh Spice
  • 4 adjustable straps
  • Higher neckline

What I don’t love:

  • The band at the top of the boy shorts matches the top. This prevents you from wearing them with other swim tops, and you can’t see it with this long tankini top anyway
  • It only comes in one pattern and 4 colors
  • Would always prefer vertical stripes to horizontal
green blouson tankini swimsuit

←The Blouson Tankini

The Blouson Tankini is another style that is more uncommon than others. I like the band at the bottom of the top, because I could literally pull it over my c-section pancake flap and it would stay there all day. It would also offer some camouflage to that same area which I’m loathe to draw attention to. The neckline is modest, which is important for larger chested ladies. Even generally modest tops tend to look very revealing on big busts, so the more modest the better as far as I’m concerned. This comes in 17 patterns, some more matronly than others, and has adjustable shoulder straps. The bottoms are a “mid waist” fit.

What I love:

  • The loose blousy top
  • The gathered bottom of the top
  • The “sewn in push-up bra”

What I don’t love:

  • Mid waist bottoms. Yuck. Give me high waist and control my muffin top!

The Boyshorts Tankini

The Zando Women’s Two Piece is a pretty simple and inexpensive set with boyshorts. The top will be flattering to smaller and larger busts, and the straps are adjustable. An empire waist makes this tankini set very forgiving to a round tummy. There are removable padded bra inserts. You’ve got 19 colors/styles, with slight variations in the top to choose from.

What I love:

  • The top is long and loose, my two favorite qualities in a top of any kind
  • Adjustable straps
  • Removable bra pads

What I don’t love:

  • No underwire
  • Boyshorts aren’t high rise

Aqua Eve Plus Size Tankini Swimsuits for Women Two Piece Bathing Suits Flowy Swim Dress with Shorts

←The Swimdress Tankini

The Aqua Eve Tankini is exclusively a plus size swimsuit, so I like to think it was made for us big girls. It has removable bra pads and nice thick straps that won’t be nearly as miserable when your large chest causes them to dig into your shoulders. Although it doesn’t specify, the boyshorts appear to be high rise. It comes in 7 colors/prints. I appreciate that they used a plus size model cause it gives me an idea of how it fits on a frame similar to mine.

What I love:

  • Thick adjustable straps
  • No bra closure, it’s a step-in
  • Ruched top
  • Removable bra pads
  • Long Skirt
  • Exclusively plus size swimwear

What I don’t love:

  • Limited colors/patterns
  • No underwire

The Flowy Tankini→

This Aqua Eve is slightly different than the previous one in that the bra isn’t ruched. This top is gathered in the center and has medium width straps that are adjustable. The back has dual bra strap closures. There are removable bra pads, and the top is long and flowy. This suit is also exclusively plus size, and comes in 12 colors/patterns. It’s perfect for a pear body shape because of the wide set straps and it is very forgiving in the hip area. You can also make this work on an apple body shape because of the very loose flowy top that completely hides the tummy area.

What I love:

  • Medium width straps that are adjustable
  • Thicker sides to minimize underarm fat rolls
  • Long and loose top
  • Boyshorts appear to be high rise
  • Exclusively plus size swimwear

What I don’t love:

  • No underwire
blouson bandeau tankini

Daci Women Plus Size Tankini Swimsuits Blouson Double Up Tummy Control Two Piece Bathing Suits

←The Blouson Hybrid Tankini

The Daci Blouson Tankini is super unique and cute. It’s two piece but looks like it has a bandeau top with a cutout blouson over it. It’s a look that I’ve seen come and go over the decades for sure. The straps are adjustable, and the bottoms have a high waist. This suit comes in plus sizes exclusively, 7 colors/patterns, and is advertised as being appropriate for maternity wear as well.

What I love:

  • Adjustable straps
  • Unique blouson top covering a classic bikini silhouette
  • High waist bottoms

What I don’t love:

  • Soft padded top sans underwire
  • The top is cut narrow at the straps, so there’s no coverage for underarm rolls, and it will also emphasize narrower shoulders

The Cutout Tankini

Love this Yonique Peplum tankini suit, it’s stylish and not every gal on the beach is gonna be wearing it. Narrow hips? No problem, the peplum gives the illusion of hips. The straps are thick, adjustable and removable, with a single bra strap closure in the back. The interesting features are criss cross webbing between the breasts, giving a pseudo side boob/cleavage look (side cleavage?). The bottoms have the same criss cross webbing across the sides. I think the best way to wear a bold print is with something to break it up, and that’s why the criss cross is so perfect on this great bathing suit. Sure, the tan lines will be weird, but we’re all wearing SPF 500 these days anyway and it’s super cute and trendy.

What I love:

  • The webbing!!
  • Thick straps that are removable too
  • The peplum top

What I don’t love:

  • No underwire
  • No boyshort option
  • Straps are set in about an inch too far making shoulders look narrow

If you love any of these suit styles then, I hope you found the best swimsuit for your body type. Remember, the most important thing is you feel comfortable. Make sure and let me know how it worked out for you in the comments. As always, wear something that makes you feel fabulous!
